After years of proration, the Enterprise Board of Education is facing the possibility of a grim financial future.

They may soon be asking the city for help.

With proration and other cuts, the Enterprise City School Board has seen over $9 million disappear from their budget the past two years.

Superintendent Jim Reese has met with board members to discuss the effect of these numbers.

“I’m concerned long term. Like I said, I think we can make it through this year in good shape unless there's a tremendous downtown in the economy and state revenues really decline, but long term, if the economy doesn't turn around I think every school system is going to be in a financial bind,” says Reese.

The school system has $3.3 million in reserve and a million meant for capital projects they can pull from.

Although dipping into the reserve is a very real possibility, Reese says it's not a cure.

“The 3.3 million is probably not one month operating expense for our schools,” says Reese.

The school board has voted to address the city council with their financial situation.

“We’d like to inform the city council of our situation and we'd like to possibly explore options with them to see if they might have a suggestion or that they might listen to some of our suggestions,” says Reese.

Reese says one of the options they hope to discuss is their agreement for the $30 million bond issue for the new high school.

Right now, the school system is to start paying the city back over $7 million in 2016.

“Of course we'd like for the entire amount to be removed,” says Reese, “that may be something we want to look at as a possibility.”

The school board is waiting to see updated sales and property tax figures before addressing the city council.

Despite the continued proration, Reese says he feels very positive about making it through the current year.
