Republican officials say white-collar workers who earn up to $100,000 a year would still be able to get overtime benefits under revised regulations.
Police and firefighters would also receive extra pay for working more hours. The proposal guarantees overtime for lower-wage workers, too.
Under the initial proposal introduced last year, the Labor Department said 644,000 white-collar workers could have lost overtime protection, and 1.3 million workers gained it.
The officials say under the revisions, as many as 107,000 workers could lose such protection, but more than 6.5 million would be guaranteed overtime.
