RANGE, Ala. (AP) - Authorities in Conecuh County say a part-time preacher facing a sex-related offense apparently shot and killed himself Tuesday morning.

Sheriff Edwin Booker confirmed 40-year-old Stephen Lyle Whitaker died of a self-inflicted gunshot just after 10 am near his father's house in the Range community.

District Attorney Tommy Chapman said Whitaker, a Brewton resident, was arrested last month and charged with felony sex abuse of an 11-year-old girl.

He said Whitaker, who was awaiting trial, served as pastor of Beaver Creek Baptist Church in Baker, Florida, located near the Alabama line.
