Ten Commandments Monument

Lawyers with the Southern Poverty Law Center, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and the ACLU of Alabama, will receive about $549,000.

An attorney for the southern poverty law center says the bill could have been even higher.

The cost of Moore's defense of the monument falls to taxpayers because he was sued in his official position as chief justice.

Moore was removed from the bench in November for refusing a federal judge's order to remove the monument.

A spokeswoman for Moore couldn't be reached for comment.
