Geneva Co. Seeks More Money for Jail Food

One Wiregrass sheriff says he can no longer afford to subsidize the cost of prison food.

Geneva County Sheriff Greg Ward told the county commission that he's allotted $1.75 a day to feed each inmate three meals a day.

It's the same allotment his department has received since the mid-1970s.

Last month, Sheriff Ward says he shelled out more than $400 out of his own pocket to meet the food bill.

He says it's something he can no longer afford.

Sheriff Ward received the commission's support on a local bill in the state legislature giving him an additional $10,000 dollars a year to meet emergency expenses.
