BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The Internal Revenue Service says many Alabamians aren't taking advantage of the agency's Free File Program.
Spokesman Dan Boone in Birmingham said with less than a month to
go before the April 17th tax filing deadline - 194,000 Alabamians have already filed electronically. Thats an increase of more than seven percent over the same period last year.
But Boone said only 34,000 - less than a fifth - of state residents e-filing from home used the IRS free filing program, which would allow them to electronically filed their tax returns at no cost. The agency said about 1.5 million Alabamians qualify to e-file through the free program.
Free File can only be accessed through IRS.gov.
