The citizens supervisory committee asked the personnel board to look into Smith's resignation last December.
Smith, a 19-year veteran of the Dothan Police Department, resigned after Police Chief John White accused the captain of writing unsigned letters criticizing the department of intimidation, racism and abuse of power.
Smith is now the city of Cottonwood's police chief. The personnel board will begin conducting interviews with members of both the Dothan Police and Fire Departments next week to determine whether any city policies were broken.
The board will also look into allegations that Smith's personnel records were falsified. The citizen's supervisory committee has given the personnel board 60 days to investigate the matter.
