Army to Conduct BRAC in 2005

Alabama Congressman Terry Everett predicts the state's military bases will not be affected during the next round of U.S. base closures.

The enterprise republican made the comments in a speech to GOP supporters in Prattville. He said Alabamians employed at Montgomery's Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base and Fort Rucker have little to be concerned about.

Everett, who is seeking a seventh term this year to represent the second district, said the bases employ 30,000 workers and account for more than $1 billion annually to the state's economy.

The Army will conduct its fifth and largest round of base realignment and closure, or BRAC, in 2005. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has recommended at least 100 of the nation's 425 bases be closed or reduced.
