Unlicensed Airports

The airport in Abbeville is one of eight across the state that officials have refused to license because they are unsafe.

And officials said 60 percent of the state's general aviation airports have problems with obstructed runways.

The airports at Union Springs, Camden, Chatom, Pine Hill, Abbeville, Bay Minette, Lanett and Atmore remain open without a current license, but the state has put them on notice that they will be closed if improvements are not made.

State aviation officials have told the local governments to submit a schedule of corrective work.

The few lights around the Abbeville Airport runway are surrounded by overgrown grass and weeds. The asphalt is cracked in several places and has grass and weeds growing in those cracks.

Abbeville officials recently received a federal grant to correct the problems and they say the work is underway.
