Florida Radar Detectors Law

Next week in Tallahassee, the Florida Legislature is expected to consider a controversial bill being backed by law enforcement. Soon it may be illegal to buy a radar detector in the Sunshine State.

Chipley resident Terry Anderson says he's had his radar detector for several months, but it's not fool proof. He still received a speeding ticket.

This week, a State Senate bill has been proposed to make such devices illegal in Florida.

Graceville Police Chief Elton Horton has been in law enforcement for more than 30 years. He has supported a measure to make radar detectors illegal.

"I think a radar detector is bought by a person who wants to speed. Speeding is dangerous."

Several minority legislators have raised concerns that the radar device law could lead to racial profiling when making traffic stops.

If the radar device law is passed by the Florida Legislature, a driver can not be stopped for simply having one, but they can be stopped for a different driving infraction and then cited for possession of a detector.
