Coffee County Jail Evacuated After Smoke Reported

Correctional officers and inmates at the Coffee County Jail had to be evacuated after smoke billowed through the facility Wednesday.

Just after ten o'clock morning, firefighters from several nearby communities arrived on the scene.

An electrical short in an attic heating unit caused the smoke, but sheriff's department officials say there was no actual fire.

Nearly 150 prisoners were led out of the facility as a precaution.

New Brockton and Enterprise police assisted in guarding the prisoners.

Sheriff's officials say the heating unit has since been repaired.
