Up to 23 killed as suicide bomber attacks entrance to military base
BAGRAM, Afghanistan (AP) - Vice President Cheney says he was briefly moved to a bomb shelter after a suicide bomber attacked near the entrance of the U-S military base where he was staying in Afghanistan.
Cheney was unhurt in the attack, which killed up to 23 people and wounded 20 more. Cheney, who left Afghanistan hours after the blast, says he heard a "loud boom" and was moved into a shelter close to where he was staying.
A military spokesman says Cheney did not appear to be the focus of the attack, but a purported Taliban spokesman has said Cheney was the target.
Cheney was in Afghanistan for a visit with President Hamid Karzai. He says the attack shows that the Taliban are trying "to find ways to question the authority of the central government."
