Money is missing from a local government agency's account and officials say they aren't criminals, but rather victims of online theft.
The Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission's director says their online account was dipped into by computer hackers.
It's believed the hackers are from overseas, but how they got into the account is still under investigation.
Director Tom Solomon of SE Alabama Planning and Dev. said, “We were shocked to discover that we experienced an unauthorized intrusion from outside our agency into our online banking account at our local bank on February 13th. We immediately contacted our bank and have been working with them as well as law enforcement authorities to determine what happened in order to recover our funds.”
The commission was formed in the late 1960's to help communities with economic development, education, and senior citizen support.
