A newborn was abandoned by her mother at Andalusia Regional Medical Center on Friday night. Authorities first believed the circumstances fell under Alabama’s new Safe Haven Law.

That law allows a mother who wants to give up her child, to leave it at a hospital or emergency medical service provider.

The Alabama law states that the child be "unharmed", but in this particular case, the baby was transported to Pensacola Sacred Heart Hospital and physicians say the child is in serious condition.

Around 6PM last Friday night, a woman went into the emergency room of Andalusia Regional Hospital and handed a newborn baby to a nurse.

She reportedly said "Safe Haven" and walked out.

The Safe Haven Law allows a mother to do that within 72 hours of the birth.

Normally, the delivering parent does not have to leave his or her name and is immune from prosecution, but in this particular case, the child was injured.

“With last Friday's high temperatures only in the 40s, Chief Williams says the infant may have been left in an abandoned, Andalusia building for more than 12 hours. The Safe Haven Law states the child must be unharmed,” explains CEO Michael Callahan at Andalusia Regional Medical Center.

Due to federal confidential restrictions, the condition of Baby Jane Doe has not been released from Pensacola Sacred Heart Hospital.

The case of the abandoned baby is under investigation by the Covington County District Attorney's Office along with the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.

The Safe Haven Law was approved to save the lives of unwanted babies.

The law is credited with saving some 23 Alabama babies since its adoption in 2001.
