Lawmakers in Washington are taking a close look at proposed changes to overtime regulations.
At a Senate hearing Tuesday, Labor Secretary Elaine Chao defended the plan against claims the administration has low-balled estimates of the number of workers who could lose overtime pay.
Chao says overtime regulations for white-collar workers haven't been updated in 50 years, and that has eroded the rights of workers.
But the AFLCIO is against the proposals. The labor coalition's Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka says no worker should lose overtime protection.
He told members of an appropriations subcommittee the Bush administration showed its true colors recently, when it suggested ways employers could avoid paying overtime to low-income workers who would become eligible this year.
