Episcopalians Forming New Organization

Episcopalians who opposed their denomination's consecration of a gay bishop are gathering Monday to form a new Network of Anglican Communion Dioceses and Parishes.

The American Anglican Council's Bruce Mason, who's attending the two-day meeting in Texas, says the network will start out inside the denomination.

But he adds Anglicans abroad may recognize the new network as the authentic voice of Anglicanism in the United States.

Mason says the network also may offer Episcopal oversight to conservative congregations whose bishops voted to consecrate the openly gay Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire.

The meeting involves conservative bishops, clergy and lay delegates from 12 dioceses with 235,000 members, a tenth of the nation's Episcopalians.
