Black Tourism

The favorite city among black tourists is Atlanta, the birthplace of the Reverend Martin Luther King Junior and home to the civil rights movement, according to a report by the Travel Industry Association of America.

The Minority Traveler report said Atlanta has become a mecca for blacks because of attractions including the National Black Arts Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, sporting events, the Martin Luther King Junior Center and the Atlanta University Center.

The president of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, Spurgeon Richardson, said -- quote -- "We have very reason to be Number one among African-Americans. The history is there, and we've had a good campaign going on for many years."

Atlanta draws 17.3 million visitors each year, and about 25 percent of them are black.

The survey of 300,000 blacks, Asian and Hispanic households in the United States found that travel by minorities increased significantly over the previous three years.
