Georgia House Urges Feds to Consider Expanding Lake Lanier

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia House members say a solution to a tri-state battle over water is to raise the level of Georgia's reservoirs.

The House unanimously agreed today to ask Congress and the US Army Corps of Engineers to study raising the water levels in Georgia's lakes.

Republican John Heard of Lawrenceville says the resolution started as a bid to raise water levels on north Georgia's Lake Lanier by two feet but quickly expanded it into an effort to increase the levels of all the lakes.

The House resolution calls for "allowing lake levels to increase as weather and rainfall permits above the present full pool levels."

Georgia, Alabama and Florida have been locked in a battle for years over limited water resources. Last month, the states asked a judge for more time to work out a complex water-sharing agreement.
