An advisory committee has recommended a raise for elected officials in one Wiregrass city.
If approved by the Enterprise City Council, the mayor's salary will increase from $70,000 to $95,000 dollars a year.
Each of the five council positions would go from $10,000 to $14,000.
The advisory group's chairman believes a competitive salary must be offered to attract the most qualified candidates to run for office.
“If you keep a salary so low, [than] people can't afford to take time from their jobs in order to run and to serve," said Advisory Group Chairman Whit Armstrong.
Troy’s mayor receives $115,000 dollars a year. A council member there earns $10,400 dollars.
In Ozark, the mayor's base salary is $52,000 dollars with the council making $7200 dollars and Eufaula's mayor is paid $30,000 dollars with council seats set at $6000.
If approved by the council, the new pay rate for Enterprise will go into effect after next year's city elections.
