A lot of Americans hope to get a better job or become a better person this year.

Those are the top two New Year's resolutions, according to a poll by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion in New York.

For others, the goal is to lose weight.

Fifteen percent of those surveyed said they want to get a better job or become a better person in 2004.

Ten percent named losing weight as their chief goal. Nine percent said they want to stop smoking, six percent hope to exercise more, and five percent want to improve their health. Four percent want to stop drinking and two percent plan to eat healthier.

Other goals included getting closer to God, spending more time with family, being kinder to others, going back to school and traveling.

But only about a third of those surveyed said they planned to make any resolutions at all.
