It was fashion with a function Friday at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center as some of Dothan’s most prominent businessmen and leaders took part in a photo shoot. Not promoting a new line of clothing, but an initiative with a bottom line…Breast Cancer Awareness.

"We're very exited this is a different approach to breast cancer awareness,” said Belinda Whatley of the Medical Center. “By focusing on ‘real men wear pink,’ we feel that we can raise awareness for the entire region."

The color may draw attention, but the issue is what drives the movement. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Impacting millions of families across the country, and the earlier it's detected, the less deadly it becomes.

“Part of that time frame in being caught early, is just awareness in being checked,” said Houston County Commission Chair Mark Culver. “If men, husbands, sons, and grandfathers can help their loved ones to be aware and to get tested, then they'll all have more prosperous lives and that's what we want."

Aside from reminders for mammograms and other breast exams, men can also help with support for patients as the disease is almost impossible to fight alone.

"It's something that affects all. Most of us men in my generation have been timid to go over something like this,” said Mayor-Elect Mike Scmhitz. “Even 10 years ago we probably wouldn't do it, but now, it's not a woman issue, it's all of our issue."
