Gov. Riley's Goals for 2004

Voters' rejection of Riley’s $1.2 billion tax package is not stopping him from designing a world-class education system and a more trustworthy state government.

Riley says he's entering 2004 with the same goals for Alabama that he had in 2003.

He'll simply approach them differently when the legislature convenes Feb. 3.

His 2004 package will include some portions of his 2003 plan, including new financial standards for local school officials, more discretion for local school officials in spending state appropriations, and changes in the teacher tenure law.

There will also be many new provisions, both for public education and state government.
