Dale County's CPC Needs Community Help

One Wiregrass county is reaching out to area children that are in desperate need of computers, and they need your help.

Dale County's Children's Policy Council says some area school children are running behind in school because they can't afford a home computer.

They say that's making the kids struggle to make good grades.

The council is now looking to the community for help.

"Many of our children are behind technologically. They don't have the advantage of having a computer in every home or having sufficient numbers of computers in the schools for them to learn how to use them," says Cheryl Leatherwood, Family Court Coordinator.

"A lot of our kids are under privileged. We're in a lower poverty type area, and they can't afford these things and the schools are requiring them to know how to use a computer. In order to get ahead in life we feel this will be a good start for them," says Debbie Vargo Carroll, Dale County VISTA Coordinator.

Through local ads, the council has raised about nine computers so far, but they are still looking to raise a lot more.

"They're not all modern technology. Sometimes they're older computers, but when you're talking about elementary and middle school children, they don't have that kind of expertise anyway. We can run some software those kids need to at least learn the basics of a computer," says Carroll.

But leaders want you to know there is more to the council than getting computers in homes.

It was created in 1999 by the state legislature, replacing the former Juvenile Justice Coordinating Councils.

Its goal is to enhance collaboration between area children's agencies, determine what needs there are in the community, and what can be done.

Membership is composed of area children leaders such as superintendents, Department of Human Resources, Department of Youth Services, local legislators, and people from the community.

All of Alabama’s 67 counties have a CPC.
