CARTERSVILLE, Ga. (AP) - A man who took his 3-year-old daughter
hostage surrendered peacefully to police early this morning after more than 14 hours of negotiations.
Forty-four-year-old Michael Ray Horton shot his estranged wife about 5:30 p-m yesterday and then barricaded himself in a Bartow County apartment with his daughter. Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap said the girl was unharmed.
Two other children, Horton's son and a friend of the boy, escaped from the apartment before the standoff began. His wife, who neighbors identified as Ruby Langston, is in guarded condition at Floyd Medical Center after she fled the apartment following the shooting.
Millsap said Horton decided to surrender after talking by phone with his mother and his wife. Horton's brother also came to the scene of the standoff to help with negotiations, Millsap said.
The negotiations were delayed some because the cordless phone Horton was using kept running out of charge.
