Coffee County’s newly sworn-in sheriff says the jail is at the top of his priority list.
Sheriff Dave Sutton says the 15-year-old facility is in desperate need of an overhaul. Besides a repainting the sheriff says smashed Plexiglas and broken doors can be found throughout the 126 bed jail.
Sutton says it's his goal to make it as safe as possible for his staff, as well as the inmates. "The infrastructure needs to be updated; cell doors need to be repaired. A new coast of paint; our kitchen needs to be updated. I believe our commissioners will work with us," he said.
This week Sheriff Sutton invited a State Department of Corrections team to do an overall shake down of the jail.
Besides a few homemade weapons, a small amount of drugs and tobacco products were also found.
