Covington County Sales Tax Will Expire

An 18-month penny sales tax will expire in Covington County on New Year’s Eve night.

The levy has raised more than $4 million for Covington County, Andalusia and Opp city school districts.

Opp Mayor HD Edgar says South Highlands Elementary is facing structural problems and needs to be replaced. He says it's imperative to find an alternate funding source

The mayor and council will discuss a one-cent local sales tax which could generate around $600,000 annually.

The meeting starts at six next Tuesday night at City Hall.

The mayor, along with school officials from all three districts, unsuccessfully tried to get the Covington County Commission to renew its local tax.
