An insurgent conservative movement threatening a break from the Episcopal Church will start looking at the nuts and bolts of a possible split today.
Participants will be briefed on such practical details as church law, clergy pensions and property rights.
Nearly 2,700 conservatives, including 46 of the denomination's 300 bishops, are attending the three-day national meeting to plan for Episcopalians who oppose the increasing acceptance of gay relationships.
A communion service last night drew around 5,000 worshipers, including area Episcopalians not registered for the meeting.
At its national convention in Minneapolis this summer, the church confirmed the election of a gay bishop living with his partner.
The Reverend Rick Kramer, one of about 800 priests attending the Dallas meeting, says he came in hopes of "taking back the church," even if that means a split.
