HealthSouth Corporation owes millions of dollars in principal to its bondholders and has made a bond interest payment of nearly $40 million.
The semi-annual payment represented all interest due on October 1st. Spokesman Andy Brimmer says it's the first regular interest payment the company has made since March, when the government accused the company and former Chief Executive Richard Scrushy of $2.5 billion in accounting fraud.
HealthSouth still owes $344 million of principal to bondholders, payments it missed in April. Those bondholders are up-to-date on interest payments.
In August, HealthSouth paid $117 million in past-due interest on borrowing agreements. The firm's total outstanding debt is $3.3 billion.
