Wiregrass Deputy Goes International

A Wiregrass retired chief deputy says he's not ready to leave law enforcement.

Walter Ford recently retired from the Dale County Sheriff's Department, but didn't stay inactive long. He is waiting to depart for Kosovo to serve as an international police officer.

Ford will join other officers from 52 countries to work for the United Nations under a civilian contractor group.

Ford will serve as a peacekeeper in Kosovo for a year before returning to the states.

“This gives me the opportunity to see a country that I probably under any other circumstance would never be able to see,” said Ford. “I'm excited about this mission, getting there to see the country, meet with the people and gain experience from them.”

Ford's exact departure date has yet to be determined; however, it will be sometime during the holidays.

He will travel with 33 other officers from the U.S. and join about 250 American civilian officers in Kosovo.
