Mailbox Bombings

A series of mailbox bombings in Houston County has investigators concerned.

They say what appears to be a teenage prank could get someone seriously hurt or worse.

Dewayne and Pam Deese are in the process of moving from one house to another. Dewayne says when he found a small, unexploded, home-made bomb in the mailbox of the new house, he wasn't too worried until he saw what one of the devices did to the mailbox at his old house.

The mail in the bombed mailbox was a charred mess. A bomb expert with the Dothan Police Department detonated the unexploded device without incident.

Corporal Carl Midkiff says the small but powerful bombs are being made from spent CO2 cartridges, possibly from a paintgun, that have been filled with gunpowder.

Two other mailboxes were also bombed Tuesday night. Investigators say whoever is responsible is risking serious injury to themselves and they could also face federal charges.

Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 to help nab the bomber before someone gets hurt. The number to call with information is 793-7000.
