Florida Prisons

Recently, the Florida Department of Corrections announced plans to build several new state prisons. Officials in one Northwest Florida city plan to lobby for one of the facilities to be built in their town.

The Graceville Work Camp employs more than 100 correctional officers. City officials believe a 150-acre site adjacent to the facility is ideal for a state prison. A 1200 bed complex would employ more than 700 area residents.

Graceville City Manager Eugene Adams says the town would give DOC the site for free in exchange for the facility to be built there. In coming months, Graceville officials will spend a lot of time visiting with lawmakers in Tallahassee.

The Florida Legislature expects to make a site decision next spring.
