An Alabama National Guard spokesman says four Army Guard units could be deployed to Iraq next year.

Lieutenant Colonel Bob Horton, a Guard spokesman in Montgomery,
said the units placed on alert status are:

1st Battalion, 131st Armor, based in Ozark.
1st Battalion, 167th Infantry, based in Talladega.
1103rd Combat Support Battalion, based in Eufaula.
1146th Personnel Service Battalion, based in Hope Hull.

Horton said the units represent about 1,200 soldiers and he said if the deployments go forward, units could be on active duty sometime in mid to late 2007.

Alabama already has eight Army Guard units based in Iraq and surrounding countries.
