Property Tax Deadline Approaching

Property taxes are due at the end of this month and Houston County's Revenue Department is concerned many people are putting off paying their bills.

Customers received notices the first of October stating if payment isn't received on time, there are late fees that will be applied.

Property tax payments are slowly showing up in the Houston County Revenue Office. Officials say if you have any concerns about how or what to pay now is the time to ask for assistance.

"This is the time of year when people wait to ask questions and we get busy after Christmas. So it's better to come in early," says Houston Co. Revenue Commissioner Starla Matthews.

It's also time to file your homestead exemption if you have been putting that off. Anyone who owns a home should do so to reduce their property taxes by 50 percent.

"Your exemptions are a percentage off if you live in and own a home,” Matthews says. “You get homestead exemptions off state taxes and it almost cuts your tax bill in half.”

If you are over the age of 65 you also qualify for at least one, but perhaps three additional property tax exemptions.

"There are three exemptions to file over 65. Just come and sign and if you want income based bring in [your] state and federal income tax form for 2005," said Assessing Clerk Wendy.

The due date for all property taxes is December 31st, and as long as the bill is postmarked by that date, no late fees will be applied.

The deadline to file a homestead exemption is December 31st.

If you are not sure whether you have previously filed you can contact the Houston County Revenue Department at 677-4747.
