Auto Insurance

Thousands of Alabamians are finding unexpected letters from the state government in their mail boxes, and ignoring the letters could be costly.

After a two-year lapse, the state revenue department has resumed checking to see if Alabama motorists are carrying mandatory liability insurance.

Each month, the revenue department will send letters to 7,000 randomly selected owners of passenger vehicles.

The envelopes contain forms that must be filled out and returned.

Those who ignore the letters or don't have insurance will have their vehicle's tag registration suspended.
