Fort Rucker

A few months ago, Air Force officials visited Whiting Naval Air Station in Milton, Florida, to examine whether it would be sensible to move Rucker's basic Air Force helicopter training there. The Florida base already conducts helicopter training for the Navy.

However, officials recommended against such a move.

As many as 20 percent of the nation's military installations could shut down in 2005.

In 1995, Alabama lost Fort McClellan to base closings.

Fort Rucker supporters says the base contributes an estimated $1 billion to southeast Alabama.
