Petition for New Animal Shelter

Another hot topic in city politics is the 1-cent sales tax increase, and officials with Dothan’s Save-A-Pet foundation are hoping some of that money goes toward building a new animal shelter.

Save-A-Pet is petitioning city leaders to allocate more sales tax money for a new shelter.

Advocates say the current facility has leaky walls, mold and rot and they say the old shelter is no longer adequate for abandoned or homeless animals.

City officials plan to allocate $400,000 over a 3-year period to help the animal shelter, but officials say that is only enough to make temporary fixes.
