Health Care Costs

If you think your work-based health premiums are a lot higher than they used to be, you might be right.

A new study found premiums for families with employer-sponsored plans jumped nearly 14-percent this year, the biggest increase since 1990.

Researchers with the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research and Educational Trust found the average annual family premium is a bit more than $9,000 now.

With employers paying a portion of the cost, families pay an average of $2,400 annually, or $200 a month. A single employee is paying about $500 a year.

Experts say the rise comes in part because workers shunned the restrictive policies of managed care plans, which sought to reduce costs.
