Officer Dexter Hammond has been a police officer for the last 16 years.

Fellow officers from across the state and beyond came at his attention to say good bye.

"It's unbelievable- the love and support for this guy and his family. He did a great thing" says Michael Murphy Sr., a friend of Dexter Hammond’s family.

Officials say last Friday, 53-year-old Fred Davis shot Officer Hammond and two Henry county deputies before being killed by police.

"Regretfully, we can't prosecute him and put him in the electric chair for what he did. He destroyed family and friends forever" says District Attorney Doug Valeska.

38 year old Hammond, a Eufaula native, has been a member of the Headland Police Department since November.

He is survived by his wife, son, parents and many other family members.

Alabama Attorney General Troy King attended his service.

"As I visited with Chrissy and Cody and as I look at this headland police badge, it reminds me of the terrible cost at which our safety comes. We are not safe in this state because of an accident; our safety has been paid for by the blood of heroes like Dexter Hammond" says Attorney General King.

More than 200 cars formed a procession to memorial garden cemetery in Eufaula.

As law officers say good bye to their colleague, they think about the dangers they face everyday, but say they will continue to protect and serve.

"We do our job because we have to; we are the thin, blue line of crooks, bad people, and the good people of this country" says Andy Barrow Assistant Police Chief, Ariton.

"We plan to inscribe his name on the wall with other law enforcement officers in this circuit very soon so they will never be forgotten. His name will be etched forever in our memories" says Valeska.

Henry county deputy Ted Yost was also shot last Friday, and his condition is improving. Officials at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center say he is in currently in fair condition.
