Federal officials are holding a South Florida man who was allegedly planning some abortion clinic bombings.
An FBI spokeswoman says Stephen John Jordi was targeting "unspecified" clinics throughout the United States. She says, "He was perilously close to carrying out his plans."
Agents met with Jordi on a boat in Miami Beach Tuesday. They say he jumped into the ocean when they tried to arrest him.
Officials say the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force had been investigating Jordi since August. His brother tells a South Florida newspaper he informed the FBI of his brother's plot after learning about it in July.
Michael Jordi, who lives in Brideport, Alabama, says his brother has "always been weird, not mentally stable." The family says the suspect is married and has four children, the youngest less than one-month-old.
