Gerald Granberry has lived across County Road 55 from Fred Davis for the past 8 years.

He says he never thought Davis could be involved in an event like Friday night, where investigators say he shot and killed Headland Chief Investigator Dexter Hammond.

Granberry, who's Uncle once owned Granberry Store next to where the shoot-out took place, says Davis has driven him out of town to the doctor multiple times. He also helped Granberry build a shed outside his home. Granberry and Davis spoke "just about every day," according to the neighbor.

"He was as good as gold and I will miss him," says Granberry. "I couldn't of had a better neighbor."

Granberry says Davis was retired as a maintenance worker from Wallace Community College.

Susie Murphy drove by the scene on County Road 55 Saturday to see what it looked like a day later. She admits she doesn't know Davis well, but did as a teenager some 30 years ago.

She says nothing showed her then that this could happen.

"He was quiet but he had friends, he just kept to himself he wasn't loud or obnoxious."
