Attorney General Bill Pryor says the U.S. Justice Department has approved Alabama's new voter ID law. It will go into effect for the September referendum.
State officials say the quick approval was a surprise because most expected the law to go into effect later. Work is beginning now to educate polling officials.
The new law allows for a wide variety of ID's. That includes any valid ID issued by the state, the military or federal government passports, an Alabama hunting or fishing license or an Alabama pistol permit are also okay.
You can also use valid Medicaid and Medicare cards or a certified copy of a birth certificate.
