Fifteen Conecuh County jailers and dispatchers remain off the job Monday because the county has not granted them a requested pay raise.
Sheriff Tracy Hawsey said the workers, whose pay starts at $6.88 per hour, want a two dollar-an-hour raise plus a ten percent annual cost-of-living raise. County commissioners refused to meet with the workers last week, leading to the walkout.
Hawsey said Friday deputies who had already worked eight-hour patrols would work another eight hours in the jail to supervise 100 inmates.
Although state law prohibits law enforcement officers, firefighters and other emergency workers from striking, the law does not apply to jailers and dispatchers.
Hawsey said he plans to take no action against the employees who refused to work.
