Domestic violence is a crime many women silently cope with, but one Wiregrass facility is giving both help and hope to victims.
Each year in the US, more than four million cases of domestic violence against women are reported. In fact, experts say domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 to 44.
For Beverly Youse at the House of Ruth, a women's crisis center, the problem of domestic abuse is a reality for the Wiregrass. While many believe this crime is of a physical nature, such as hitting or beating a spouse or girlfriend, counselors say it also constitutes verbal and psychological abuse.
Many victims say the hardest part of being abused is dealing with the wide array of emotions, both their own and the abuser's. One way the center helps those who are abused is through small groups where women can share their thoughts and feelings in a non-threatening environment. And those who have recovered from the pain and cruelty of this crime say there is hope and healing for any woman who may find herself in a similar situation right now.
If you or someone you know is dealing with domestic violence, you can call the House of Ruth at 793-2232.
