Emergency Landing

plane 200x120

A plane had to make an emergency landing in Newton Wednesday tying up traffic on Highway 231 North during rush hour.

Newton Police say the small plane was flying from Dothan to Troy when the plane's motor malfunctioned around 5 o'clock.

After repeated attempts to restart the engine, the pilot of the Ultra-Lite Phantom landed at a nearby weigh station on 231 North.

Fortunately, both the pilot and aircraft landed safely and no one on the ground was injured.

Police closed both North and South bound lanes of Highway 231 to safely move the plane out of oncoming traffic.

Bill Crawford of Troy was piloting the plane. He says in his 37 years of flying small planes, this has happened to him only once before.
