Sunday marked the end of the sixteenth annual model train show in Dothan. More than a thousand vistors made their way to the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds to check out the event.
Trains were the feature event at a two day long expo organized to give those who love trains a chance to share their hobby with others.
President of the Wiregrass Railroad Society Danny Lewis said, "Everybody loves trains, it brings out the kid in you and a lot of work goes into it."
Train enthusiasts from several states came to Dothan to show off their craft. Each train layout takes months to create, but those in charge of building the sets say all the hours of hard work are worth it when the turnout at events like this is so high.
Member of the Pensacola Model Railroad club Glen Hall said, "We like to bring everything out to show children and let them get decited and learn about model railroads." Trains are a passion shared by people of all ages, but today's event seemed to focus on educating and entertaining the youngest in the crowd.
Child attendee John David Reese said, "I wanted to check out the trains." His brother Dalton said, "I like the trains, especially the army train."
Members of the Wiregrass Railroad society made the event free for children so more kids would get a chance to enjoy the show. Parents were happy to share the excitement with their children.
Attendee of the event Miriam Granberry said, "My son and husband usually come and this is drill weekend so I get to come with him. " Another parent at the event Neville Reese said, "Trains are a big part of the American Culture and I wanted to expose my children."
The Railroad society estimates that between 12 and 15 hundren people attended the train expo, All of the money raised from admission benefits the Wiregrass Historical Railroad Society which uses the funds for several community projects including donating model trains sets to local hospitals.
