Bush-Urban Leaders

George Bush

Snubbed by the leader of the Congressional Black Caucus, President Bush has gotten applause from black urban leaders hearing about his efforts to steer government funding to faith-based groups.

Congressman Elijah Cummings declined to attend a briefing on Bush's trip to Africa. He says, Bush has shunned the group's counsel on issues like unemployment and terrorism.

Also, Bush spoke to about 120 mostly black community leaders. He focused on his efforts to fund faith-based programs with taxpayer money. He also discussed his Africa tour and his global AIDS initiative.

Opponents of Bush's faith-based plans say the government would wind up paying for religion. They also don't want taxpayer-funded groups to be able to hire and fire people based on their religious beliefs.
