Fayette Shootings

An 18-year-old arrested in the shooting deaths of two Fayette police officers and a dispatcher has applied for status as a youthful offender.

If convicted as a youthful offender, Devin Darnell Thompson would serve no more than three years in prison for the slayings.

The shootings happened on June 7.

As Thompson was being booked at the Fayette Police Station on a car theft charge, he allegedly grabbed an officer's gun and opened fire inside the small town police station.

Prosecutors have said they would fight the request and plan to seek the death penalty.

Thompson faces six counts of capital murder for the slayings. He is being held without bond in Tuscaloosa County Jail.
