Alabama Lawmakers to Vote

Alabama lawmakers return for the final day of the Legislature's 2003 Regular Session Monday.

And, Gov. Riley has a warning for them, approve $39 million in emergency spending or prepare for a summer special session.

The final day will be unusual because lawmakers won't be rushing to complete work on the state budgets.

Riley got the legislature to postpone writing the state budgets until after the Sept. 9 voter referendum on his $1.2 billion tax and accountability plan.

That means the last day will be devoted to other measures that are competing for attention. Most of them have passed the house and are pending in the Senate, where stalling tactics throughout the spring used up most of the workdays.
