Affirmative Action Reaction

It's a split ruling, but still, a student supporter of affirmative action at the University of Michigan says she's "thrilled" with today's decisions from the Supreme Court.

The high court Monday upheld the policy of the university's law school to give minority applicants an edge when applying for admission. But the justices struck down a point system used by the school to give preference to minorities applying for undergraduate admission.

The justices said the law school's "narrowly tailored use of race" was OK, but that the undergraduate school's admissions policy isn't the way to achieve racial diversity.

Jackie Bray, who heads a University of Michigan group called Students Supporting Affirmative Action, says the court is recognizing the importance of race-conscious admissions policies.

She calls it "a great day" for people who believe in "democracy and equality."
