Students from schools in Dale County gathered for their annual spelling bee.

Words like "adios" and "necessary" were given to students to spell. Teachers say holding events like these creates excitement for students when learning.

"If they can master and feel like they can accomplish something academically I think it really helps," says English teacher Michael Hatcher.

7th grader James Mize took home Friday's trophy.

He will go on to the state competition in Montgomery in March.
